New Study Uses Math to Decode Creativity and Idea Formation

A new research study has examined the mathematical principles governing creativity and innovation, shedding light on how novel ideas emerge. By analysing data across different domains, researchers have identified patterns that could refine the understanding of how individuals and societies generate new concepts. The study investigates two types of novelty—discovering an entirely new element and forming unique combinations of existing elements. The findings could be crucial in fields such as science, literature, and technology, where innovation plays a vital role in advancement.

Mathematical Framework for Creativity

According to the study published in Nature Communications, researchers introduced a framework to model how new ideas emerge. Led by Professor Vito Latora from Queen Mary University of London, the team focused on higher-order novelties—combinations of familiar elements that create something new. Speaking to Phys.org, Prof. Latora stated that the study is part of a broader effort to understand the mechanisms underlying creativity, aiming to identify factors that contribute to the success of ideas, products, and technologies.

A mathematical model called Edge-Reinforced Random Walk with Triggering (ERRWT) was developed to simulate how people discover and combine elements. Unlike traditional random walks, which assume equal probability for each step, ERRWT strengthens frequently used connections and triggers new links when novel combinations occur. This process mirrors real-world discovery, where repeated exposure to certain elements increases the likelihood of making new associations.

Analysing Patterns Across Domains

The research team applied the ERRWT model to three distinct datasets—music listening habits from Last.fm, literary texts from Project Gutenberg, and scientific publications from Semantic Scholar. The findings revealed that while individuals might have similar rates of discovering new elements, the sequences in which they arrange them differ significantly.

For music listeners, certain users developed unique listening patterns despite discovering the same number of new songs. In literature, writers frequently created new word pairings rather than introducing entirely new words. Scientific papers, particularly titles, demonstrated a higher tendency for novel word combinations compared to narrative texts.

Predicting Innovation with Heaps' Law

The study also highlighted that the process of novelty creation follows Heaps' law, a power-law relationship describing how new elements and combinations emerge over time. By applying this principle, researchers could predict different rates of innovation across disciplines. The results indicated that while some fields prioritise the discovery of individual elements, others focus on recombining existing ones in unique ways.

Implications for Future Research

The findings suggest that understanding how creative processes unfold could help refine strategies for fostering innovation. Prof. Latora noted that studying novelty creation is essential for identifying factors that contribute to the rise and decline of trends, products, and ideas. Future research aims to expand the model by incorporating a social component, which could provide insights into how external influences shape creative developments.

Researchers Spot Unusual, Overmassive Globular Clusters in Ultra-Diffuse Galaxy FCC 224

A team of researchers has observed an ultra-diffuse galaxy, FCC 224, uncovering an unusual system of globular clusters. The galaxy, located in the Fornax cluster approximately 65 million light-years away, has been found to host luminous and overmassive globular clusters. The study, conducted using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and supported by spectroscopic data from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI), has provided insights into the formation and evolution of this galaxy and its star clusters. The findings indicate a single-burst star formation history, with the globular clusters displaying unique characteristics in terms of mass, size, and brightness distribution.

Overmassive Globular Cluster System Identified

According to the study published on the arXiv pre-print server, FCC 224 is a quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxy estimated to be around 10 billion years old. It has a major axis effective radius of roughly 6,160 light-years and a stellar mass of approximately 200 million solar masses. Observations have revealed that the galaxy hosts 12 exceptionally bright globular clusters, with some showing absolute magnitudes around -9.0 mag. The total mass of these clusters is estimated to be 3.8 million solar masses, accounting for nearly 2 percent of the galaxy's stellar mass, which is significantly higher than expected for a galaxy of this size.

Distinctive Features of the Globular Clusters

As reported by phys.org, the study found that the globular clusters in FCC 224 closely resemble the galaxy's diffuse starlight, exhibiting a narrow color range and lacking a significant color gradient. This suggests that the galaxy underwent a single, intense star formation period. Researchers also noted that these clusters have relatively small sizes, with half-light radii ranging between 7.8 and 15.6 light-years. The globular cluster population appears to be radially mass-segregated, with brighter clusters concentrated toward the galaxy's center.

Implications and Future Research

Findings from the study indicate that FCC 224 possesses an unusual globular cluster system with characteristics that challenge conventional expectations. The research team has suggested that further theoretical studies will be needed to explain the origins of these distinctive properties and the role they play in the galaxy's evolution.

First Mouse with Two Fathers Thrives into Adulthood, Marking New Scientific Milestone

A major development in stem cell science has been achieved with the creation of a bi-paternal mouse, marking a significant step in reproductive biology. Scientists have successfully engineered a mouse with two male biological parents, which managed to survive into adulthood. This research, conducted by a team of stem cell experts, has addressed longstanding barriers in unisexual mammalian reproduction by modifying specific imprinting genes. The findings, which could have implications for regenerative medicine, highlight the challenges and potential future applications of the technology.

Genetic Modifications Enable Bi-Paternal Development

According to the study published in Cell Stem Cell, led by Wei Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the team focused on overcoming imprinting-related challenges that previously prevented embryos with same-sex genetic origins from developing fully. Modifications were made to 20 imprinting genes using techniques such as frameshift mutations, gene deletions, and regulatory region edits. These changes allowed some bi-paternal embryos to survive to birth and, in rare cases, reach adulthood.

Co-corresponding author Qi Zhou of CAS explained to phys.org, that imprinting genes have been identified as a key obstacle in unisexual reproduction. Despite previous attempts using ovarian organoids derived from male stem cells, imprinting abnormalities caused severe developmental defects. By directly editing these genes, the research team improved embryonic viability and the stability of pluripotent stem cells.

Survival and Reproductive Challenges Remain

As per reports, only 11.8 percent of the engineered embryos developed to birth, and those that survived exhibited developmental abnormalities, reduced lifespan, and sterility. Guan-Zheng Luo of Sun Yat-sen University, a co-corresponding author, stated that imprinting abnormalities have been confirmed as the primary factor preventing unisexual reproduction in mammals.

Despite the limitations, this approach has demonstrated the potential for refining stem cell-based therapies and improving cloning efficiency. Researchers plan to expand the study to larger mammals, though substantial challenges remain due to differences in imprinting gene patterns across species.

Astronomers Discover 19 New Quasars Using DESI Legacy Surveys Data

A significant discovery has been made in the field of astronomy, with 19 new quasars, including strongly-lensed, dual, and projected types, identified through analysis of data from the DESI Legacy Surveys photometry catalog. This breakthrough highlights the potential of quasar observations in furthering our understanding of the universe. These objects, known for their extreme luminosity and powered by supermassive black holes, have long been pivotal for research into astrophysics and cosmology. Observations were conducted at the Palomar Observatory in California.

Findings of the DESI Legacy Surveys

According to the study led by Zizhao He of the Purple Mountain Observatory, the investigation confirmed two strongly-lensed quasars, six dual quasars, and 11 projected quasars. Observations were carried out on October 15–16, 2023, using the P200/DBSP instrument. The study noted that the lensed quasars, designated J0746+1344 and J2121-0826, were observed at redshifts of 3.1 and 2.39, respectively. J0746+1344 displayed a unique configuration, with the lensing galaxy positioned beside the brightest image—an anomaly compared to typical observations.

Dual and Projected Quasars

As reported by phys.org, the six dual quasars identified showed redshifts ranging from 0.59 to 3.28, with separations between their components varying from 50,300 to 73,500 light years. Among these, J1929+6009 stood out due to a remarkably small redshift difference of less than 0.0001 and a projected separation of 62,800 light years.

The 11 projected quasars demonstrated separations spanning 35,700 to 123,400 light years. One such system, J0422+0047, was previously thought to be a gravitationally-lensed quasar system, though further analysis indicated a chance alignment of projected quasars with an intervening galaxy, complicating its classification.

Implications of the Discovery

This research underscores the importance of advanced observational techniques in uncovering unique cosmic phenomena. By analysing the behaviour, redshifts, and configurations of these quasars, astronomers aim to expand their knowledge of the universe's structure and the dynamics of supermassive black holes.

Apple Readying New Version of visionOS for Future AR Smart Glasses: Gurman

Apple started selling its first mixed reality headset Vision Pro in select global markets last year. The Cupertino giant is now believed to be on track to release smart glasses to expand its product portfolio in the augmented and mixed-reality space. A recent report by Bloomberg states Apple's long-rumoured smart glasses are in the works. The company is said to be developing a new version of visionOS that is tailor-made for these glasses. Apple is anticipated to release other devices in the style of Vision Pro that it hopes will be cheaper and more enticing to consumers.

Apple Smart Glasses Are At Least Three Years Away

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman claims that work on the AR glasses is ongoing at a secretive facility in Santa Clara, California. Apple is said to be working on a version of visionOS — the Vision Pro's software — that will run on its smart glasses. The Vision Pro also runs on the same OS. Gurman notes that Apple is conducting user studies at its offices to gauge the appeal of features and interfaces alongside developing AR technology for future devices.

The Apple AR glasses will reportedly take three years or more to be ready. In the meantime, The iPhone maker is reportedly exploring other types of wearable products, including a rival to Meta's Ray-Ban spectacles and even camera-equipped AirPods

According to Gurman, Apple had originally hoped to launch its AR spectacles as a follow-up to the Vision Pro, but the plan was dropped due to technical challenges.

Apple is not the only company working on smart glasses. Apple's major rival Samsung also joined the race and announced its XR headset earlier this month. Meanwhile, Meta is eying to unveil its AR product named Orion by 2027. Google is developing an operating system specifically for headsets and glasses called Android XR.

Apple is expected to design AR glasses with broader mass-market appeal than the Apple Vision Pro. It unveiled the Vision Pro in 2023 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The shipments began last year in select markets like the US, China, and Japan with a starting price tag of $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,90,000). It is available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage configurations.

Apple Rolls Out iOS 18.3 Update for iPhone With Key Changes to AI Notification Summaries: What’s New

iOS 18.3 update for iPhone was rolled out by Apple on Monday. It is substantially smaller than the first two numbered updates which introduced notable features, most of which are part of Apple Intelligence — the company's artificial intelligence (AI) suite. However, it brings a key change to Notification Summaries following the recent criticism faced by the Apple Intelligence-powered feature for generating erroneous summaries of news headlines. It also includes other tweaks related to the Calculator app and Apple Intelligence' opt-in system.

iOS 18.3 Update for iPhone: What's New

According to Apple's release notes, the iOS 18.3 update is compatible with the existing models which support iOS 18. One of the most notable additions in the update is the changes to Notification Summaries. The feature is now turned off by default and made unavailable for the News & Entertainment category. Users who opt-in to use it will be able to do so when it is made available again.

The feature, introduced with iOS 18.1 last year, condenses information acquired from notifications to let users quickly scan through key details in a summarised format. However, the company recently drew flak, most notably from BBC, which approached Apple about false information being added to AI summaries. And while Apple did not pull down the feature or release a fix at the time, the latest update disables it by default. It now also appears with a warning that says “may contain errors.”.

Another change to notification summaries is to its presentation. Apple says it will now appear with italicised text to help users distinguish it better from other notifications.

Apple has also made Apple Intelligence an opt-out feature. Previously opt-in, users will now have to manually opt-out if they do not wish to use Apple's AI suite. This option is present in the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings pane in the Settings app.

Visual Intelligence is also getting some tweaks. Apple says users can now add an event to Calendar from a poster or flyer. Further, it will be able to identify a wider range of animals and plants. This feature is exclusive to the iPhone 16 models and is accessible via the Camera Control button.

Meanwhile, the company has brought back a key functionality to the Calculator app. With iOS 18, Apple removed the ability to repeat the last mathematical operation by tapping the equals sign repeatedly. iOS 18.3 brings it back. Along with these changes, the update also carries fixes for bugs related to Genmoji, HealthKit, and Writing Tools.

Gadgets 360 staff can confirm that the update and its features are now available to use on iPhone.

Google Pixel 9a's Higher Storage Variants to Reportedly Cost More than Last Year’s Model

Google Pixel 9a is rumoured to be in development as the most affordable option in the Pixel 9 series. However, it may not be as cheap as last year. A new report suggests that some variants of the phone could be more expensive compared to their Pixel 8a counterparts. This decision by Google is said to affect the pricing strategy of the purported Pixel 9a in Canada and the US. Notably, this development comes after the entire spec-sheet of the phone was leaked in December.

Google Pixel 9a Price Hike

According to an Android Headlines report, the Google Pixel 9a's price will start at $499 (roughly Rs. 43,000) in the US for the 128GB storage model, which is the same as Pixel 8a's starting price. However, that may not be the case for the phone's other variants. The 256GB variant of the Google Pixel 9a is reported to cost $40 (roughly Rs. 3,500) more compared to the launch price of Pixel 8a with the same configuration.

Thus, the phone could now start at $599 (roughly Rs. 52,000), creating a whopping $100 (roughly Rs. 9,000) gap between the two models. The report speculates that Google's pricing of the Pixel 9a in Canada could be more "flexible".

This move is expected to bring Google's pricing strategy for the Pixel 9a at par with its flagship models. The Pixel 9 series, launched at the Made by Google 2024 event in August, costs $100 more for the 256GB storage variants.

Google Pixel 9a Specifications

Previous reports indicate that the purported Google Pixel 9a will sport a 6.3-inch Actua display, with an adaptive refresh rate ranging between 60Hz and 120Hz. It is expected to be powered by a Tensor G4 chip which also powers the flagship models, along with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.

For optics, Google will reportedly equip the Pixel 9a with a 48-megapixel primary camera, complimented by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and a 13-megapixel selfie shooter. It is also rumoured to deliver considerably improved battery life than its predecessor, with a bigger 5,000mAh battery.

Airtel's voice and SMS-only recharge plan prices have been revised, days after the operator introduced new prepaid options for customers in compliance with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) guidelines that were announced last month. The operator has silently updated the prices of both voice and SMS-only special tariff vouchers (STV), shortly after the TRAI said that it would examine the newly launched vouchers. The operator previously updated its existing STVs that included data allowance with the new recharge vouchers.

Airtel Voice and SMS-Only Recharge Vouchers Price in India

Earlier this week, Airtel announced a new STV priced at Rs. 499, with unlimited voice calls, 900 free SMS, and 84 days validity. Similarly, subscribers could also opt for a Rs. 1,959 recharge plan that has a longer validity of 365 days — it offered unlimited voice calls and up to 3,600 SMS. These plans have now been removed from the telecom operator's website.

Airtel's website now lists two new STVs that are cheaper than the ones it introduced a few days ago. The Rs. 499 voucher is now priced at Rs. 469, while the Rs. 1,959 plan will be available for Rs. 1,849. Subscribers who opt for these plans are eligible to receive the same benefits as the previously STVs.

There's no word from Airtel on why it slashed the price of its recharge plans. However, it's worth noting that a now-deleted post on X (via Hindustan Times) the TRAI stated that it was planning to examine the new vouchers offered by Airtel and Jio.

“It has come to notice of TRAI that recently few service providers have launched voice and SMS only packs which will be reported to TRAI with in seven working days from the date of launch. The recently launched vouchers will be examined by TRAI as per extant regulatory provisions,” the regulator said.

The TRAI has yet to issue a response to the change in pricing for the voice and SMS-only plans that were updated on Airtel's website on Saturday.

Airtel subscribers looking for a voucher that includes a data allowance will have to opt for either the Rs. 548 plan that offers 7GB of data with 84 days validity, or pay Rs. 2,249 for the annual plan with 30GB of data.

iPhone 17 Series to Arrive With 'Largely Unchanged' Dynamic Island: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 17 series — comprising the purported iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max — could arrive without any major changes to the Dynamic Island this year, according to a market analyst. The latest claim contradicts previous claims that Apple would reduce the size of the Dynamic Island, which currently houses the selfie camera, and other sensors used for features like Face ID. The company is said to be working on the ability to eventually completely move these components under the display.

iPhone 17 Pro Max Said to Feature Same Dynamic Island as iPhone 16 Pro Max

TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims in a post on X (previously known as Twitter) that he expects Apple to keep the size of the Dynamic Island "largely unchanged" on the iPhone 17 series. The post, which contradicts previously leaked information about the floating section, doesn't include any additional details related to the iPhone 17 lineup.

It's worth noting that Kuo has a reliable track record when it comes to predicting details of Apple's upcoming devices. The latest claim contradicts one made in July 2024 by Jeff Pu of Haitong International Tech Research. Pu had stated that the Dynamic Island would use a “metalens” technology for the proximity sensor in this top-end variant — the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple previously shrunk the size of the display notch on older models, such, as the iPhone 13 series — a year before the Dynamic Island was introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro. However, it looks like users might have to wait for at least another year before an iPhone with a smaller Dynamic Island arrives.

According to a recent report, Apple might be planning to equip the iPhone SE 4 with a body that closely resembles the iPhone 14, but also includes the Dynamic Island feature instead of a display notch. The company's successor to the iPhone SE (2022) is expected to arrive with several upgrades to the display, camera, processor, and could arrive with support for Apple Intelligence and Face ID.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra Design, Rear Camera Module Spotted via Leaked Live Image

Xiaomi 15 Ultra is expected to launch in the coming weeks, as the company's top-of-the-line model in the flagship series. Previous reports suggest that the handset will be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite and a quad rear camera setup. Now, a tipster has leaked a hands-on image of the purported Xiaomi 15 Ultra, giving us a good look at the design of the high-end phone. The phone is expected to feature a large camera module like its predecessor, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra Design (Leaked)

An image of the purported Xiaomi 15 Ultra was leaked by X (formerly Twitter) user Kartikey Singh (@That_Kartikey). The hands-on image shows the rear panel of the handset in a black colourway, with a familiar design. There's a larger centre-aligned module at the top of the screen, which includes four cameras along with the usual Leica branding.

The tipster claims that the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will be the only flagship handset to be equipped with a 1-inch type sensor as well as a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. The rear panel appears to have a matte finish, and the phone features rounded edges. The Xiaomi logo is seen in the bottom left corner, and the back of the phone does not include any additional text or logos.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra Specifications (Expected)

According to a recent report, a listing for the Xiaomi 15 Ultra on China's MIIT certification website suggests that the phone will be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is the same chip that powers the other Xiaomi 15 series. It is also expected to run on Android 15, with the company's HyperOS skin.

The Chinese smartphone maker is also expected to equip the Xiaomi 15 Ultra with a quad rear camera setup, comprising an unspecified 1-inch type primary camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera, and another 50-megapixel telephoto camera. It is also said to have an IP68+IP69 rated build for dust and water resistance.

Tata Electronics Acquires 60 Percent Stake in iPhone Maker Pegatron Technology India

Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd (TEPL) on Friday announced the acquisition of a controlling 60 per cent stake in Taiwanese contract manufacturer Pegatron's India unit, cementing its position as a key player in the Indian electronics manufacturing sector.

The financial details of the transactions were not disclosed.

Pegatron India is a subsidiary of Taiwanese Pegatron Corporation, engaged in the provision of contract-based electronics manufacturing services (EMS) to global giants like Apple.

The latest deal is expected to strengthen Tata's position as an Apple supplier and bolster its iPhone manufacturing plans.

Announcing the acquisition of a 60 per cent stake, Tata Electronics said Pegatron Technology India will undergo rebranding to reflect its new ownership structure and business direction while continuing to deliver high-quality electronics manufacturing services.

The latest move by the electronics arm of the salt-to-software conglomerate follows its acquisition of Wistron's India operations (based in Narsapura, Karnataka) less than a year ago in March 2024.

In fact, in his New Year message to employees, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran asserted that with global supply chains continuing to shift in India's favour as the world's largest businesses strike a new balance between resilience and efficiency, manufacturing has the potential to transform the country's economy.

Chandrasekaran termed it as "a new manufacturing golden age for India".

On Friday, Tata Electronics CEO and MD Randhir Thakur said the acquisition of a majority stake in Pegatron Technology India fits into Tata Electronics' strategy of growing its manufacturing footprint.

"We look forward to a new era of AI, digital, and technology-led manufacturing as we bring up these new facilities and expand our operations in India," Thakur said.

In addition to TEPL acquiring a majority stake in Pegatron Technology India, the two companies will work on integrating their teams to work seamlessly.

Tata Group has been scripting an aggressive blueprint for electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.

Tata Electronics is building India's first Fab in Dholera, Gujarat, with a total investment of Rs 91,000 crore. In addition, another Rs 27,000 crore will be invested in a greenfield facility in Jagiroad, Assam, for the assembly and testing of semiconductor chips. Together, these facilities will produce semiconductor chips for applications across automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence (AI), and other key segments to serve customers globally.

Tata Group will create 5 lakh manufacturing jobs in the next five years across sectors such as semiconductor, electric vehicles, battery and related industries, Chandrasekaran said in October last year.

Tata Sons' top honcho had asserted that India cannot achieve the goals of being a developed nation if the country cannot create manufacturing jobs.

Samsung Official Teases Galaxy S25 Edge Launch Timeline at Galaxy Unpacked: Report

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge could launch in the next few months, according to a report. The South Korean technology conglomerate launched the Galaxy S25 series at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event in San Jose, California on Wednesday. Alongside, it also debuted a new device with a thinner profile than its flagship models, bringing back its ‘Edge' branding and giving it the moniker Galaxy S25 Edge. However, the phone was only teased and no information about its price or specifications was provided.

Now, a new report suggests that a company representative might have officially teased Galaxy S25 Edge's launch timeline.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Launch Timeline

Citing an unnamed Samsung representative speaking at the end of the showcase, 9to5Google reports that the Galaxy S25 Slim will debut “around April”. This reasonably corroborates previously tipped launch schedules which hinted towards an April or May unveiling.

Not much is known about the device either. At Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung showcased internal components of the phone in a teaser video, suggesting the inclusion of a dual camera unit with vertically stacked lenses at the back. The Galaxy S25 Edge is said to pack a much slimmer profile than its flagship counterparts in the Galaxy S25 series.

While other specifications remain unknown, it is widely touted to be Samsung's answer to the rumoured iPhone 17 Air, which could debut this year as part of the iPhone 17 lineup. The phone is likely to be positioned between the Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra models in the company's lineup.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Specifications (Expected)

Past reports suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge may be equipped with a 6.66-inch display, similar to the Galaxy S25+ model. The phone is said to sport a 6.4mm thin profile without the camera unit, while it may measure 8.3mm in thickness around the camera module.

For optics, it could sport a dual rear camera setup headlined by a 200-megapixel primary camera. The Galaxy S25 Edge is believed to be powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset which also powers the flagship Galaxy S25 models. It may be paired with 12GB of RAM as standard.

Samsung Teases XR Headset With Multimodal AI Capabilities, Smart Glasses at Galaxy Unpacked 2025

Samsung once again teased its upcoming extended reality (XR) headset, dubbed ‘Project Moohan', this time at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event in San Jose, California on Wednesday. During the announcement, a silhouette of an XR headset graced the screen with an appearance remarkably similar to the Apple Vision Pro. While the South Korean technology conglomerate did not delve into any specifics, it reiterated that the headset will be powered by the Android XR operating system (OS), developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm.

Alongside the XR headset, the company teased that it might be developing another wearable in the form of smart glasses.

Samsung XR Headset, Smart Glasses Teased

At the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event, Samsung teased that its XR headset will support multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. With it, the company aims to change the way people “interact with the physical and digital world”. Subsequent visuals showed how users may be able to control the XR headset.

The Samsung wearable might get eye tracking capabilities similar to the Apple Vision Pro, which leverages a network of LEDs and infrared cameras that project invisible light patterns onto each eye, enabling the wearer to select elements just by looking at them. Additionally, they may also be able to control the XR headset using hand gestures as well as speech.

While this was the extent of the Samsung XR headset teaser, the company also hinted towards the potential development of a pair smart glasses. It emphasised how multimodal AI will “change” interaction with new form factors like XR devices. The visual showed the aforementioned XR headset along with a pair of smart glasses.

First announced in December 2024, Samsung's ‘Project Moohan' XR headset is speculated to come with multimodal input, state-of-the-art displays, and passthrough capabilities. The company says it will also offer support for Google's Gemini AI assistant and will have apps optimised to run on a large, virtual display. It is confirmed to be the first offering in the market to be powered by the new Android XR OS and thus, may support several of its features including Circle to Search with gesture support, web browsing via Google Chrome, immersive views using Google Maps, and live translation of text seen within the wearer's point of view.

Xiaomi Unveils WinPlay Engine With Support for Windows PC Games on Android

Xiaomi might soon allow Windows PC games to run on its lineup of Android tablets, according to a recent teaser shared by the company on social media. It is said to be testing a new system called WinPlay which brings support for Windows games to Xiaomi tablets. While still under development, Xiaomi says that its WinPlay Engine will result in only a marginal GPU performance loss when playing. It is also claimed to support Steam and its large repository of PC games too.

WinPlay System Being Tested on Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4

The company showcased its WinPlay Engine in a post on Weibo, the Chinese social media platform. Xiaomi claims it results in a loss of only 2.9 percent in terms of GPU performance when playing games. Since it is under development, Xiaomi is recruiting volunteer testers in China to use its engine. Currently, this program is limited to Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro owners. The device is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage.

The WinPlay Engine is powered by Xiaomi's HyperCore — a self-developed underlying kernel technology platform which is claimed to improve performance, graphics, network, and security. It was introduced with the company's Android 15-based HyperOS 2 in October.

The company's kernel architecture features a proprietary microarchitecture scheduler, which can reduce the idle time of the CPU by 19 percent. Further, it results in up to 54.9 percent faster app launch speeds on smartphones by optimising task cycles and memory latency.

HyperCore has been developed by a team of over 3,000 engineers to achieve optimisation for more than 25,000 scenarios.

Xiaomi says its WinPlay Engine will support Steam and its library of games. However, it remains unknown if other storefronts, such as the Epic Games Store and GOG will also be supported.

WhatsApp Will Soon Let Users Share WhatsApp Status Automatically on Facebook and Instagram

WhatsApp will soon benefit from an optional integration with Meta Accounts Centre with the aim of delivering a more connected experience, the company announced on Tuesday. This move will enable users to share their WhatsApp statuses automatically on other Meta Platforms' apps such as Facebook and Instagram. It is also claimed to make it easier and quicker to log in to multiple Meta apps with a single sign-on. Additionally, the company says it will introduce more universal features across its social media apps and inform users about the changes upon rollout.

WhatsApp's Account Centre Integration

Meta Platforms detailed the addition of WhatsApp to its Accounts Centre over the next few months in a newsroom post. As per the company, the move is completely optional, and users can still choose to not add their WhatsApp accounts to the Accounts Centre. However, doing so is said to enable access to features more seamlessly across apps. They can reshare updates from their WhatsApp Status to Facebook or Instagram Stories directly. This negates the need to post multiple times across different apps.

The option will be introduced globally, but its complete rollout may take place in a phased manner. When available, users will see the option in WhatsApp settings or it will appear when trying to take action across accounts, such as re-sharing status to other Meta Platforms' apps.

Further, the Accounts Centre integration brings single sign-on for all three apps, allowing users to log back into them with fewer steps. The company says it will also roll out new features such as the ability to manage your avatars, Meta AI stickers and Imagine Me creations in one place across apps.

However, Meta Platforms emphasises that privacy is still its priority and even when WhatsApp accounts are connected to the Meta Platforms' Accounts Centre, personal messages and calls are still protected by end-to-end encryption and not even the company itself can read them.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event Today: How to Watch Livestream, Expected Announcements

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event will take place later today (January 22) in San Jose, California. It is the company's first launch event of the year where the next generation Galaxy S devices, ubiquitously known as the Galaxy S25 series, are expected to take the stage. Samsung's flagship phones will arrive as the successor to the Galaxy S24 series which debuted on January 17, 2024, and pre-reservations for the devices have already commenced in India ahead of the official release. Additionally, the company may also shed more light on ‘Project Moohan' — its first extended reality (XR) headset that was announced in December.

Here's what to expect from the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 Event: How to Watch

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event will begin at 11.30pm IST (1.00pm EST) on Wednesday, January 22 in San Jose, California. It will be live streamed via Samsung Newsroom, various social media channels as well as the brand's YouTube channel.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025 Event: What to Expect

The standout announcement from tonight's event is expected to be the purported Galaxy S25 series. Following the trend of yesteryears, the flagship mobile lineup will likely comprise three devices — the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra. All models are expected to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset with 12GB of RAM as standard and get Dynamic AMOLED 2X screens.

The standard Galaxy S25 model is rumoured to be equipped with a 4,000mAh battery, while the Plus and Ultra variants may feature 4,900mAh and 5,000mAh cells, respectively. The most notable change is speculated to arrive with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. It is reported to ditch the boxy design that has become synonymous with Samsung's ‘Ultra' models in recent years in favour of a more rounded appearance this time around. Meanwhile, the other two models may have an unaltered design.

Customers can pre-reserve the next-generation Galaxy S series smartphone via the company's official India website, Samsung Exclusive Stores, and online and offline retail stores by paying a token amount of Rs. 2,000, which will give them early access to the handset. The Galaxy S25 is expected to be priced at EUR 909 (roughly Rs. 81,000) for the base 128GB variant, while the 256GB variants of the Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 Ultra may cost EUR 1,159 (roughly Rs. 1,03,500) and EUR 1,459 (roughly Rs. 1,30,300), respectively.

However, that is not it when it comes to hardware launches as the brand is expected to have much more in store. Samsung could unveil a new device, dubbed the Galaxy S25 Slim, which as the name suggests, will have a slimmer form factor than its flagship models.

The brand is also reported to showcase prototypes or teaser video clips of its upcoming XR headset. Dubbed ‘Project Moohan', it has been developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. As per Samsung, the XR headset runs on Android XR platform which is designed to support features that rely on augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI).

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Could Bring 200-Megapixel Telephoto Lens; Galaxy S26 Series Tipped to See Charging Upgrade

Samsung Galaxy S25 series has yet to be officially unveiled, but rumours about the successor have started popping up on the Web. Most recently, the camera and charging details of next year's Galaxy S26 trio have been revealed in leaks. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is tipped to come with a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. The lineup is also said to launch with 65W wired fast charging support. Samsung's Galaxy S25 series will be launched at the Galaxy Unpacked event later this week.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Could Get New Periscope Telephoto Camera

Tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo claimed that Samsung is evaluating a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.5-inch sensor size. This sensor could be used in the Galaxy S26 Ultra model. Samsung's rival Vivo has already equipped Its Vivo X100 Ultra and Vivo X200 Pro with 200-megapixel telephoto sensors.

The current Galaxy S24 Ultra model has a 50-megapixel telephoto shooter with OIS, f/3.4 aperture and 5x optical zoom. The upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra is expected to retain this camera setup. It is likely to carry a quad rear camera unit including a 200-megapixel primary lens, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto lens with OIS and 5x optical zoom, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom.

Additionally, tipster @kro_roe on X suggested that the Galaxy S26 series will feature 65W wired fast charging. This would be a considerable improvement over the 45W charging expected to be offered by the Galaxy S25 lineup. Samsung has been sticking to 45W wired charging for quite a while now.

Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event will take place on January 22 in San Jose, California. The Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 Ultra models are expected to go official during the event. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s Top-End Variant May Be Limited to Asian Markets; Galaxy S25 Slim Availability Tipped

Samsung Galaxy S25 series is expected to be launched at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event on Wednesday. Ahead of the flagship phones' debut, a tipster has suggested that the top-end variant of the purported Galaxy S25 Ultra may not be available in all regions. In fact, only four countries are expected to have this device in the market. Meanwhile, another report claims that the new Galaxy S25 Slim model may have a much wider availability than what Samsung offered with its Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra's Top-End Variant

According to tipster yawn's (@chunvn8888) post on X (formerly Twitter), the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra may offer 16GB of RAM with its top-end variant. However, there are questions over its wider availability. It is tipped to be exclusive to the Asian markets and may be sold in only four regions — China, South Korea, India, Vietnam.

The aforementioned model is said to be launched in 12GB+256GB, 16GB+512GB, and 16GB+1TB configurations. It is further suggested that the South Korean technology conglomerate may offer a free storage upgrade from 256GB to 512GB on pre-orders, depending on the customer's location.

The purported Galaxy S25 Ultra, along with the base and Plus models, will likely be powered by Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.

Expanded Availability of Galaxy S25 Slim

A PhoneArena report, on the other hand, sheds light on the availability of Samsung's newest model — the Galaxy S25 Slim. It will reportedly be launched in 39 countries, including Australia, India, Russia, the UAE, and the UK. It may be sold in the following countries:

  1. Afghanistan
  2. Australia
